THE SCIENCE OF
SPF ROOFING
Decades of peer-reviewed research, government studies, and real-world performance data make the case for SPF commercial roofing. Here is the evidence.
THE NUMBERS BEHIND
THE SCIENCE
Highest R-value per inch of any commercial roofing insulation. Closed-cell SPF outperforms fiberglass, XPS, and polyiso at equivalent thickness.
Reflective silicone topcoat plus R-6.5/inch insulation cut HVAC loads. Buildings in IECC Climate Zone 5A show 15-30% lower annual HVAC energy costs per ORNL Roof Savings Calculator modeling.
SPF roofs installed in the 1970s remain in service today. When properly maintained with periodic recoats, SPF systems can last indefinitely.
Unlike single-ply or built-up systems, SPF creates a continuous, seamless barrier with zero joints, laps, or fastener penetrations where leaks typically originate.
HOW SPF CUTS
ENERGY COSTS
Closed-cell spray polyurethane foam combines the highest R-value per inch of any commercial roofing insulation with seamless air sealing, delivering compounding energy savings year over year.
“The experience that Texas A&M University Physical Plant has gained since 1974 indicates that no major problem, and very few minor ones, exist in the polyurethane roof systems.”
SAM COHEN, TEXAS A&M PHYSICAL PLANT DEPT.
LBNL Heat Island Group modeling shows that raising roof reflectance from the 10-20% typical of dark membranes to 60%+ with a white coating cuts building cooling-energy use by more than 20% (Levinson & Akbari, 2010).
Air leakage can account for up to 40% of a building's heating and cooling energy loss (DOE / ENERGY STAR). SPF's monolithic, fully adhered assembly seals the roof plane without joints or fasteners.
Silicone-coated SPF reflects solar radiation and reduces peak roof surface temperatures by up to 60 degrees F vs. dark membranes (CRRC / ENERGY STAR product data), extending both HVAC and roof life.
A 50-YEAR
TRACK RECORD
Early SPF commercial roofing installations begin across the U.S., primarily on large flat-roof structures.
SPFA documents roofs installed in the 1970s still performing without replacement. First major longevity studies published.
Next-generation silicone coatings extend recoat cycles to 15-20 years and dramatically improve UV and ponding water resistance.
Original SPF roofs from the early 1970s remain in active service. Industry consensus: properly maintained SPF systems can last indefinitely.
LAYER BY LAYER.
Each layer of an SPF roofing system serves a specific engineering purpose. Together they create a seamless, insulated, reflective commercial roof system.
SPF bonds directly to the existing roof membrane (BUR, TPO, EPDM, metal, modified bitumen). No tear-off required. The existing roof becomes the substrate for the new system.
The core of the system. Closed-cell polyurethane foam delivers R-6.5 per inch of insulation, structural reinforcement, and a completely seamless air/moisture barrier.
UV protection, solar reflectance, and weather resistance. Silicone topcoats maintain flexibility and adhesion through extreme temperature cycling and ponding water exposure.
Ceramic granules provide impact resistance and additional solar reflectance. Creates a walkable surface for maintenance access.

THE BOTTOM
LINE
No demolition, no disposal fees, no new decking. SPF applies directly over the existing roof, avoiding the cost of a full tear-off and replacement.
Reduced HVAC loads from superior insulation and solar reflectance translate directly to lower utility bills. Savings compound annually as energy costs rise.
SPF restoration can reset your roof to new-roof insurance classification. Building owners may see premium reductions when coverage shifts from ACV back to RCV after SPF installation.
Seamless membranes eliminate the #1 source of roof failures: seam and flashing leaks. Routine recoating every 15-20 years extends the system indefinitely.
